The Metropolitan Counties Energy Task Force completed a strategic planning process at the end of 2007. As a part of that process, the group formally adopted the name Metropolitan Energy Policy Coalition (MEPC) to reflect the long term interest of its members in the use of secure, safe, reliable, sustainable, economical and environmentally responsible energy for constituents. The MEPC seeks to lead by example by practicing energy conservation, using renewable energy sources in an effective manner, and taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

MEPC provides a forum for member counties and members from the Metropolitan Council to address issues related to energy policy and industry restructuring by identifying key interests and issues to County government. The Task Force engages in matters of strategic interest to meet the needs of Minnesota Counties to secure safe, reliable, economical, and environmentally responsible energy sources.

MEPC shall consistently act to ensure that restructuring, access, needs and governance in the energy industry are consistent with maintaining safe, affordable and reliable energy, developing renewable energy sources, improving the efficiency with which we utilize energy resources, and contributing to help Minnesota become energy independent.

This group was organized in 1999 in response to deregulation that was sweeping the energy sector to ensure availability, reliability and affordability of electricity and natural gas supplies in Minnesota. As the pace of restructuring has slowed, the coalition has provided an educational forum for County Commissioners on supply, policy and regulatory issues.
